March 2017 Wrap-up

3/31/2017

Life

March continued the drama that had erupted in February and it was difficult... so very difficult... to hold my tongue.
Picture
March 2 - #thatmomentwhen good sense (and class) dictates silence and you just wanna unleash a maelstrom of expletives...

Outwardly, I did a good job. Behind the cover of private messages, however, I was not that honorable. Given the opportunity, when called a "sheep/follower" and "pathological liar" I lost it... but still kept it classy. No name calling, no low blows, just truths.
By the end, it was almost as if we were "friends" again... although I remain unfriended on social media and haven't heard from them since. I don't care, well, I care enough to post about it, but I grew up a military brat. Friends came and went and if you didn't adapt, you were a lonely kid. I have never been lonely.

Mom

Mom [made] a version of Tom Yum, which in our house, is the chicken soup you eat when you're sick. It's spicy. She's making it for her mother-in-law who is sick.

Mom: Honey, come taste this soup when you're done. I want to make sure it's hot enough to burn her ass.

Him: Don't burn her ass.

Mom: You gotta burn out the sickness, honey.

Ring, ring
Mom: He just came in Ohma, now I'm hungry.
Me: Who came in?
Mom: The chicken guy.
Me: Um... you never mentioned a chicken guy. Is he dressed like a chicken?
Mom: NO (exasperated, then long pause)
Me: Does he cluck like a chicken?
Mom: NO, every time he come in he smell like BBQ chicken.
Me: Ah.... and now you're hungry.
Mom: Now I'm hungry.
Me: Want me to bring you some food?
Mom: No, I have some.

Me: Mom, these labels are impossible. I can't even use my phone trick and any distance.
Mom: You figure it out , Ohma. I want to know which one I use first.
Me: Can you read the label?
Mom: Why you think I ask you, dummy?

Mom bought a collection of beauty products from HSN and needs me to number them 1-5 in order if use.

Spent the day with moms and family today... nothing extraordinary, except the food of course, and some ragtag conversation about the boy going to a strip joint and my mom saying she would drag him out by his ear... all in all, a GREAT day!!

Tim is a great friend I met through my best friend... Tim and I had made a bet. A bet about who the shoes belonged to at the end of the mid-season finale of the Walking Dead. We bet lunch. Guess who paid for who?

I had Tim take me to one of my favorite places, Uncle Angelo's inside Jerry's Nugget.

It was great to spend some one-on-one time with him.

A Friend's Sabbat

I've known Kelly since 2009. I met her on a radio show I once hosted about paganism. She came on the show and represented the Elven tradition. We made a lot of jokes about needing to have pointy ears to join but in Kelly, I found a wonderful, kindred spirit. We also share the same birthday. Sisters! After eight years, we were finally able to get together for a sabbat and I was delighted to have attended. I met her extensive group who were dynamic and friendly and participated in a most loving ritual. I was honored to have been asked to call and dismiss a quarter, and the after party food was tremendous! I do hope it won't be another 8 years for us to share a sabbat together.

Pod people.   -   Even pod people have a back up coffee maker.   -
Lol there are 3 coffee makers in my house.   -
Me too! I have a single serve, a regular pot, and a percolator that will make 32 cups of coffee. (Also I have an electric kettle and a French press in case you want to get fancy)   -
What no coffee. Who does that !!!   -

This is why my dad always travels with a single cup pot and a little container of Folgers.

There are many who say that there are only two seasons in Vegas: hot and cold: I beg to differ. Signs of spring can be seen everywhere. This is in the parking lot of a grocery store while I wait for my neighbor.

The commentary on the last picture stemmed from my neighbors not liking Mike. It quickly turned to reminiscing and sadness; everyone still misses him deeply. However, if Evil Dave can scrounge up the video of the night Mike got shot in the ass, we have a great night ahead!

The Godfather

Picture
On March 13, 2009, after a Pagan Pride meeting, at our favorite bar at the time, I discovered a drink called the Godfather.
Some stories say it was inspired by the famous gangster film of the same name; others say that the Don himself, Marlon Brando, drank it regularly.
The mix I first had was 2:1 - Scotch & Amaretto. I've seen recipes for 1:1 and 16:1 - I'll stick with the 2:1. My deepest thanks to PPD coordinator Peter Bear for the discovery. It's still my go-to beverage.

On the 12th, the ladies and I streamed live interviews from Plush the Nightclub's party, Glitter and Glamour. We tried recording via facebook but the music pumping from the club obscured the recording so we relied on the Ustream recording. We thought we had shut down the Facebook live stream but to our astonishment, we had not. These are the screen shots of our discovery. This won the night!!

My social media offering for St. Valentine's Day
February 15
I discovered a storytelling podcast many, many years ago called "The Vinyl Cafe" - Stuart McLean was directly responsible in fostering my need to move to Canada... long before a certain politician rose to power. Stuart passed away on Feb 15th and I feel as though I've lost a friend. My favorite stories are “Dave Cooks the Turkey” and "The neighbours who renovated" but my absolute favorites were when Stuart would wax on about the history and beauty of the various cities and towns he visited when The Vinyl Cafe was on the road. Listen to as many as you can. Maybe I can get you to move to Canada with me.

I learned a wonderful new word

nepenthe

(noun) Originated from Ancient Greece, nepenthe is described as something, which can make you forget your heartache, grief or suffering. (via wordsnquotes)
and I realized I have a lot of things in my life that I can classify as nepenthe

Jasper Driver
A new gorgeous friend, Jasper, had this in his timeline

"Always keep your friends close and your enemies closer because now you've got a human shield of your enemies."

During the Feb 12 live stream broadcast, the ladies and I interviewed a few people and Jasper was one of them. I had been prepared by Toxi prior to meeting him and indeed was quite intrigued. He was described as gregarious and delightful albeit a tad provocative. When I actually shook hands with him, I found him charming and beautiful, an Adonis to take the breath away. His social media is a delight to follow. @jasper_driver

Broken Heart CC BY 2.0 by David GoehringBroken Heart CC BY 2.0 by David Goehring
My heart was broken this month. Someone whom I loved dearly, instead of bringing an issue they had to me, chose a different way to handle it. I was crushed that this was the path they had chosen. Even moreso since the ensuing chaos has defamed another person I love and cherish. I have asked myself many times over the course of these past few days, what, if anything, could I have done to engender more trust by this individual. When I have an issue with something someone said or did, I go to the source, always to the source. I thought this was known protocol... or rather, I would have hoped that this was the protocol I have tried to instill in those around me. After days of ruminating, I realize it wasn't something I did or could have done. It was a knee-jerk reaction on their part. I am disappointed.

Because of the chaotic aftermath of the above story, I thought I would offer up a sounding board if anyone had any questions about some of the heinous social media posts that they had been seeing. I offered up the simple,
"Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have."

After an innumerate amount of private messages, and several public questions that made me pull out my dusty tarot cards, I finally had to close the thread but I have to say, it was a fun Saturday.

I'll have to do it again soon.

Sean Spicer Press Conference (Melissa McCarthy) - Saturday Night Live video
February 4
"It took a few insults delivered in a trademark shriek to hammer home that this really was Melissa McCarthy, in drag, capturing the unquestionable essence of a political figure whose public image so far has largely revolved around belligerence, alternative facts, and cinnamon gum. As soon as the assembled audience figured it out, they began cheering, causing McCarthy’s Spicer to berate them once again. “Settle down, SETTLE DOWN!,” she screeched. “Before we begin, I know that myself and the press have gotten off to a rocky start. And when I say rocky, I mean Rocky the movie because I came out here to punch you. In the face. And also I don’t talk so good.” ~quoted from The Atlantic

Myths For Kids

2/24/2017

Myths, introduced when you are a child, make deep impressions that carry on throughout your life. I discovered Greek myths this way and have had a love of them ever since. The very first myth I ever read explained why we had winter 3 months out of the year. It was a beautiful, gentle tale of the love between a mother and daughter, Demeter and Persephone.

My love of myths and stories and folkore stemmed from this series of books:
Childcraft Encyclopedia - Erma Zurita
"Childcraft was created as a sort of encyclopedia for young children. With simple texts and illustrations, the volumes were designed to make learning fun. Each volume addressed different subjects, including literature — such as short stories and poetry, including fairy tales and nursery rhymes — as well as mathematics and the sciences." ~https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childcraft

We had the 1974 version of which I read every one, cover to cover, several, several times.

While researching for a simple children's story of how Odin obtained the runes for a post, I discovered this great site with kid stories accompanied by audio; including this one about
'How Odin Lost His Eye.'
"We learn how Odin, the chief of the Norse gods, gained True Wisdom so that he could see everything that was happening, and was about to happen, all at the same time. He had to pay a high price for the gift, as you will hear."
Read by Elizabeth Donnelly. Adapted for Storynory by Charlotte Sebag-Montefiore. Duration 14.32

Mom: I never known people in this country so hateful, Ohma.
Me: They've always been, mom. People just think they can be open about it now. I'll say this though... you keep watching this (Fox news opinion) and it will always stay that way. They only talk about the hate.
Mom: Shut up, Ohma. I like this channel. They always speak truth.

Me: Why didn't you guys tell me my sister was coming? I would have rearranged my schedule.
Mom: We call you, Ohma.
Me: Today... I can't change things last minute mom.
Mom: Shut up, Ohma. You not so big I can't beat you ass.

Spongy, Friends, Fatness & Photos

Feb 4, 2017

When your weekend starts like this, it's gonna be a good time.
Road trip with the ladies - Erma Zurita
The ladies and I were heading out on a short road trip and decided to selfie it just in case we were all lost at once (abducted by aliens, etc). Love these ladies! During the trip we had several conversations, including one about pig bungholes being spongy...

Current convo: balls and bungholes #spongy

Refering to a podcast I had heard from This American Life
Transcript and download available

In my 'On This Day' popped up an article about taking photos when you're fat and how a lot of people who are indeed fat, avoid photos often.

Many years ago, I was quite camera shy because of my weight. That changed. With photos we document our own history; our lives, our loves, our passions, our dreams. I always take several photos now and find the one I like the best. I hope to get selfies with every friend I have and will ever have. :-)

From the article: "Our vanity is no longer enough of a reason to avoid the camera. Life doesn’t wait until you “get thin” enough to capture it. Life is happening... it is happening right now and the only moment we are guaranteed is the one we are living."  Click here to read the article from the Huffington Post in full.
I'm totally zen about it now and plan on getting a selfie with every. single. one. of. my . friends.

Mom: I'm mad at stars, Ohma.
Me: Wait... did you say you were mad at the stars? Like, movie stars?
Mom: Yeah, they talk all bad sh*t about Donald Trump.

No audience for you, movie stars.

Me: Mom, do you know what that animal is?
Mom: Koala, I used to have one when I was a little girl.
Me & Brian: In Thailand?!?!
Mom: It was stuffed.
Me & Brian: Ohhhhh....
Mom: When I was 12 this man came into my family's restaurant from Australia. When he went home he send me big box of stuff and the koala.
Me: Awwww, how sweet. Did you carry it everywhere with you?
Mom: No, Ohma... it was real but dead. You know, stuffed.

My very favorites.

On Monday, March 10, my mom said to me when she heard me humming:
"Ohma, it's too bad you can't sing no more. You used to sing good."
Thanks mom. I spent the entire next day singing Tracy Chapman's, Heaven's Here On Earth. She's right.

A facebook friend posted the BladeRunner Trailer and I was asked about the Horses story  I watch the Walking Dead with one of my favorite people every week and I have multiple types of copies of the books.

I'll add more as I come across 'em.

Love the human drama following an apocalypse. In fact, I love most apocalyptic aftermath movies. The human condition and struggle when faced with adversity is fascinating to me.

"There is a clue here.
The seat of this higher valor, I suspect, lies in that which is female. The words themselves for courage, andreia and aphobia are female, whereas phobos and tromos, terror, are masculine. Perhaps the god we seek is not a god at all, but a goddess. I don’t know."

"There was a scream,
and everyone looked at the girl.
It was not she who had screamed, but the cutler's wife beside her. But the girl was the cause of the scream. She had sunk to her knees in front of the gallows, with her arms adopted to utter a curse. The people shrank from her in fear: everyone knew that the curses of those who had suffered injustice were particularly effective, and they had all suspected that something was not quite right about this hanging. The small boys were terrified."

Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity.
