New Criteria for 2022

8/31/2021

I saw someone carrying and using a leather covered bullet journal. I fell in love, So I ordered one,. It took almost two weeks or research before I settled on:

Unika
A5 Refillable Leather Journal

The logo sold me.
It also meant that I would be moving back into an A5 book for 2022.
The journal cover came with a book inside. Here are the pen tests.

Front & Back
As you can see, of all the inks & mediums I used, only the Sharpie bled through to the back.

Then I broke the spine of the notebook and all hell broke loose. The signatures became misaligned and the smoothness of the edges became rough and uneven.

It was also THICK.

Measurements:
1 1/8” thick (3 cm/ 30 mm) compared to a Nanami A5 (9/16” / 1.5 cm / 15 mm)
However, I tried several other notebooks in the cover and they worked just fine.(pictured below is the cover and an Artist's Loft hardback book. (measuring; (11/16” / 1.8 cm/ 18 mm)

I did, however, commission a friend to add some elastics so I could use it as a traveller's notebook. I am in absolute love!

Erma's Search for a 2022 Book Part One

7/31/2021

Comments

Tomoe River paper is no longer going to be in production. Nanami will be using a paper called Zen that the owner didn't really care for and, so I went on a search for a new book for 2022. I had several criteria for the book I was going to be using:
Picture
Paper Penguin Co. on Etsy had lots of paper for me to try. Cosmo Air Light was the talk of the journaling crowd so I was eager to try them.
  • Number of pages (You get a little spoiled with 400 pages of Tomoe River Paper so I wanted something comparable. The lowest I was willing to settle for was 256 pages. FYI, I never use all the pages but I like knowing I have them to use, in case I need them.)
  • Ability to take Fountain Pen Ink (New inks these days are amazing! The sheens, the shimmers, the vibrancy, oh my. I wanted a paper that could show these inks at their best.)
  • Prefer a 4mm grid
  • White paper
  • Softcover
Here are the photos from my Paper Penguin and fountain pen tests
  • Mitsubishi Paper Mills Bank Paper: An amazing paper! A little too see through for my taste. I like see through but not that much.
  • Cosmo Air Light Paper: Beautiful sheening! Especially on the individual letters. A little too off white for my taste. Do they even make a "white"?
  • White Shiraoi Japanese Paper: No.
  • Tomoe River Paper White 52 gsm: Even though I know it wouldn't be available, I got a small book of it anyway because her prices are great.

Here's the website for the Paper Penguin Co. https://paperpenguinco.com
I don't get a commission but tell Dominique I sent you! She's fantastic!
On my last order, I requested some fancy covers (her choice).
They were beautiful... all just my style.

The Search Continues...

I decided to switch from an A5 size to the B6 Slim. I did stick with Nanami Seven Seas brand of books. Nanami also offers inexpensive plastic covers which I utilized to display some of my favorite things. great thing is, I can change it up anytime.

My 2019 Plournal was a Nanami A5 with 480 pages of which I have over  100 pages untouched. The B6 Slim only has 384 pages.

I also didn't have time in the last quarter of the year to do much of anything, including journaling, so this year I decided to make all my months up front, including a monthly to do checklist. Hopefully, without having to take the time every month to set up the next month, I'll at least be able to take a few minutes to do the most important part: to record the memories & thoughts I want to preserve.

eptember begins the 3rd month of a new style of journaling I've adapted to. I've moved entirely away from creating weeklies to penning dailies as I need them (or am able to do them). It is ever-evolving and I look forward to it changing even more as I hone in on "my style." Notes pepper in and out of the dailies as I find information I want to record or events I want to record. Sidebars are left for current events and memes! Doodles and sketches have scaled back however, which is the only downside, for now.

“The world is holy. Nature is holy. The body is holy. Sexuality is holy. The imagination is holy. Divinity is immanent in nature; it is within you as well as without. Most spiritual paths ultimately lead people to the understanding of their own connection to the divine. While human beings are often cut off from experiencing the deep and ever-present connection between themselves and the universe, that connection can often be regained through ceremony and community. The energy you put out into the world comes back.”

One of my greatest loves is science fiction. It probably started when my dad gave me these pulp novels about a guy who would get into a machine naked and get transported to other worlds with women in fur bikinis and saber-toothed tigers. Best novels ever! Especially when you're only 8-9 years old. Since Jan 2nd is Isaac Asimov's birthday, I went with a sci-fi theme for the monthly calendar. The robot from the movie, I, Robot with Will Smith (flying a kite in honor of Ben Franklin) and the Dune sand worms and quote are my favorite pieces... so far.
